Crypto Is a Scam. So Why Does Pat Ryan Support It?
Pat Ryan, Jackie Auringer, and the GENIUS Act: what readers need to know this week
Pat Ryan is up for re-election against Jackie Auringer. Like you, I don’t know much about Ms. Auringer, so we’ve been in touch with her campaign to give her an opportunity to speak to you directly.
We’ll extend the same invitation to Rep. Pat Ryan’s office, but his PR people tend to write back only when I’m breaking news to his staff, not when I’m asking about the AIPAC money Ryan accepts.
To his credit, Ryan has offered to sign a pledge with Ms. Auringer that would prohibit them both from accepting any PAC money during this campaign. We will follow up on this and will be following the congressional race more closely once we get to the fall.
For now, I just want to remind everyone that Pat Ryan was one of very few Democrats to support passing the GENIUS Act.
Unfortunately, not many people understand crypto, let alone what the GENIUS Act is. So I spoke to Dr. Algernon Austin, the director of race and economic justice at the Center for Economic and Policy Research. Austin is a critic of cryptocurrency, like I am, and he does an excellent job of explaining what it is, how it works and why the GENIUS Act is bad news.

P.S. Apologies for the short post. I have two podcast episodes coming to you next week concerning our FOIA project. I’m now only a day behind because of a migraine. That’s going to happen as I try to keep up this daily schedule.
When it does, I’ll pop in here with a highlight from our sister project, Stupid Sexy Privacy.
